A Day in the Life – JT Dog Training (Jennifer Thomas)

As a professional gundog trainer, my days are structured, varied and very hands-on. Whether I’m training my own dogs, welcoming young pups or fine-tuning advanced retrieves, the aim is always to build confidence, clarity and control between dog and handler.

I run puppy training groups from 14 weeks, giving new owners the tools to raise calm, responsive dogs right from the start. As dogs progress, they move into our gundog foundation groups, where we introduce core skills like steadiness, memory retrieves and basic handling. I also run focused workshops covering specific areas such as heel work, recall and engagement, alongside 1-2-1 sessions for those needing more tailored support.

Most of my training takes place at our secure paddock near Princes Risborough, but I also hold regular sessions at West Wycombe Park. The varied ground, woodland and water there make it an ideal environment for developing gundog skills in real world settings.

I use practical, reliable kit that supports the work. Mystique canvas dummies are my go to for land and water retrieves, and my Pinewood training vest keeps everything I need to hand without getting in the way.

Every dog is different, and every session is built around their individual needs. But whether it's a puppy learning the basics or a more experienced dog preparing for the shooting season, the goal is always the same: to build a calm, capable and consistent working partnership.
