From Baby to Beater: Raising Harry in the World of Countrysports

I still remember the look on people’s faces when I turned up to a shoot with Harry at just 8 days old. Wrapped up snug in a carrier, tucked under my coat with a maternity zip, he was already part of the countryside rhythm. Fast forward, and now—five seasons later—he’s out there working his own dogs, waving his junior beating flag with pride, and showing a passion that’s never wavered.

Watching Harry grow up in the field has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s not always been easy, but it’s been worth every muddy welly, every snack-packed rucksack, and every layer of waterproofs. His love for the countryside, the dogs, and the people around him has only deepened, and I couldn’t be prouder.

The Right Kit Makes All the Difference

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that having the right equipment is absolutely essential. Brands like Muntjac Trading have been lifesavers. They’ve helped make the field accessible and enjoyable for Harry from day one.
Whether it’s a hand-held carrier from Muntjac, tiny ear defenders, or junior-sized dummy vests, leads and whistles, these companies understand what it means to take a toddler into the field. Their gear is practical, durable, and designed with real families in mind.

Top Tips for Taking Little Ones into the Field

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years, broken down by age group. If you’re thinking of introducing your child to country sports, these tips might just save your sanity—and keep your little one happy. I practiced with this kit out of the shoot season so that Harry could get used to it and I could see how long he would be able to manage.

0–6 Months
  • 🧺 Comfy front carrier – Keeps baby close and warm.
  • 🧥 Layers + maternity zip coat – Essential for temperature control.
  • 🍼 Milk at all temperatures – Be prepared for feeds anywhere.
  • 🎵 White noise machine – Helps baby settle in unfamiliar surroundings.
  • 🎧 0–12m headphones – Protect those tiny ears from loud bangs.

6–12 Months
  • 🎒 Comfy back carrier – Great for longer walks. One that you can sit down and it stand ups to save your back
  • 🧤 Layers – Weather changes quickly.
  • 🎧 Ear defenders – A must on shoot days.
  • 🍪 Snacks + milk – Keep them fed and happy.

12–18 Months
  • 👢 Good wellies (Muddies) – Waterproof and sturdy.
  • 👐 Hand-held carriers (Muntjac) – Perfect for short distances.
  • 🌧️ Waterproofs – Invest in quality.
  • 👕 Many, many clothes changes – Mud is inevitable!

18 Months+
  • 🍎 SNACKS – Never underestimate their importance.
  • 🐕 A gundog and game carrier – Gives them a sense of purpose.
  • 🚩 Junior beating flag – Makes them feel part of the team.

Whatever the age of the child you wish to take out make sure the shoot is happy for you to attend with a child in tow, it can be nerve wracking enough knowing that your little person HAS to behave let alone if you already feel uncomfortable on the shoot or not welcome with your child. Pick the family oriented fun shoots that will welcome your little people with open arms and take the time to teach them. There's time in their little lives to go to more serious shoots.

Why It’s All Worth It

There have been cold mornings, muddy afternoons, and plenty of tired evenings. But seeing Harry’s confidence grow, watching him learn to read the land, and seeing the bond he’s built with his dogs—it’s all been worth it.

Country sports have given him more than just fresh air and exercise. They’ve taught him patience, respect, teamwork, and responsibility. And for me, they’ve given memories I’ll treasure forever.

If you’re thinking about bringing your little one into the field, my advice is simple: start early, pack well, and enjoy the ride. You might just find, like I did, that you’re raising a future gamekeeper right before your eyes.
