Wound cleaning

Before dressing your pet's wound, it's crucial to clean it thoroughly. Dressing a dirty wound can trap debris and potentially worsen the injury. Use sterile wipes or gauze pads in the first aid dog kit to gently remove any dirt or debris from a wound. If any small objects are visible and easily removed with tweezers, carefully grasp them with the tip and pull them out, never dig into he wound as there’s more risk of infection or imbedding the object deeper. If the wound is near your dog’s eye, you will need to use the saline eye wash only.

Bandages and Dressing

After cleaning your pet's wound, proper bandaging can help protect it from further contamination, promote healing, and prevent your pet from licking or chewing at the area. Our first aid dog kit bandages are aimed towards minor cuts, scrapes, abrasions and superficial wounds after cleaning. They are not suitable for burns or deep wounds. If your pet has either of these wounds, you should seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. Keep the bandages you apply dry and as clean as possible and don’t wrap them too tightly around your pet, as this can restrict blood flow to the area and the wound needs space to breathe.

  • Non-stick pads: These absorb fluids and protect the wound from sticking to the bandage.
  • Gauze pads: Used for applying gentle pressure and absorbing drainage. They are designed so as not to stick to the wound.

Accessories and Life-Saving Equipment

A foil blanket can be found in our first aid dog kits; these are designed to keep your dog warm if they’re in shock or exposed to cold environments. An ice pack can be found in your pack too, apply this to swollen injuries or sprains. A disposable Tourniquet is a life-saving tool that reduces blood flow to an open wound. If this is needed, you should also be on the way to your nearest vet as it’s an emergency. Our tongue depressors can be used to look as far back into your dog’s mouth and throat in the case of obstruction. Plastic forceps and emergency whistles can also be found in these kits.
